The Builder
Gilbert Chen (gchen on the FoloCam forum) is a software engineer who has spent more than a decade building tools at the intersection of video processing, computer vision, and reliable storage. He is the sole developer of FoloCam, and personally replies to almost every question that lands in the community forum.
He is also the author of Duplicacy and the creator of ActionStitch.
Previous Work
Duplicacy is a popular open-source backup tool widely regarded as the most robust deduplication-based backup solution available. Duplicacy is used by individuals, homelab operators, and teams to back up reliably to any major cloud storage backend — with lock-free concurrent clients and content-defined chunking that keeps storage and bandwidth costs low.
ActionStitch is the first app of its kind: it stitches footage from two action cameras (such as two GoPros) into a seamless 180° panoramic video, purpose-built for sports filming and coaching analysis. ActionStitch pioneered the panorama-from-action-cameras workflow that several commercial sports cameras have since adopted.
Why FoloCam
ActionStitch proved that capturing the full field as a panorama was technically possible — but it required two cameras, careful mounting, and post-processing to stitch the footage. For most coaches, parents, and clubs, that's still too much friction.
FoloCam takes the opposite approach: zoom in first, then let AI track the ball. A modern iPhone has enough Neural Engine compute (16–35 TOPS, depending on the model) to track a soccer ball at 75 yards in real time. And Apple's DockKit framework, introduced in iOS 17, lets the iPhone directly drive a motorized gimbal — no proprietary hardware required. That combination simply didn't exist when ActionStitch was first built. FoloCam is the natural next step: less gear, lower cost, and tighter footage that actually shows the action.
The same engineering discipline that goes into Duplicacy — correctness, performance, and a long support tail — also made FoloCam possible.
The Company
FoloCam LLC is an independent US software company. There are no investors, no growth-team headcount, and no plans to be acquired. The roadmap is set by what users ask for in the community forum and what is technically possible on Apple silicon.
